As Icron enters the USB over DisplayPort and KVM (Keyboard, Video, Mouse) Video+USB Extender markets, we decided to conduct research into the PC video market. After reading analyst reports and forecasts (e.g. In-Stat), and speaking with various Silicon companies and small/large OEM’s organizations, we discovered some very interesting findings in the projections for video format adoption market.
From this research we concluded:
- DisplayPort adoption is coming and it will be huge. Even though the number is a bit off to what was initially predicted, analysts say over 600 million DP chips will be developed for the upcoming transition.
- While DisplayPort monitors are currently high end cost, in 2011 they will start to spill over into consumer higher volume, lower cost models
- A large number of monitors already have USB functionality including USB hubs and/or integrated touchscreens and webcams
- USB + DisplayPort technology will be coming to monitors
- HDMI output ports, which are used to connect your laptop to your TV, are still strong in consumer laptops
- VGA is not going away as fast as people think, with non-EU and US countries still embracing it strongly
- DVI is still a great video technology and is especially strong in Europe. DVI markets will take some time to transition to other video formats (e.g. HDMI/DP)
The transition away from VGA and DVI will likely take some time. In the meantime, companies delivering DVI+USB and VGA+USB extender solutions for consumer KVM, interactive digital signage, medical imaging, and industrial applications will still have significant demand in the marketplace.
