ExtremeUSB for Wireless - The key element for a true cable replacement solution

Since its introduction, USB has become one of the most successful computing technologies in history.  Ubiquitous on virtually every computing platform available today, the simple serial interface provides connectivity for an ever growing list of peripheral devices.  From keyboards and mice, to printers, DVD players, web cams, portable storage, displays, and the ever popular music players, USB provides simple connectivity for a variety of devices that have become commonplace in the home, office and industrial workplace.  Following a common trend in technology development, USB is the latest technology to move into the wireless realm, removing the wired clutter of the desktop.  Using its patented ExtremeUSB® technology, Icron is a key contributor to this wireless revolution.

ExtremeUSB was developed to extend USB connections beyond the desktop. By managing the Turnaround Timer function in the USB protocol, ExtremeUSB allows for higher latency and delay in a USB connection, capable of extending USB up to 100s of meters over Category 5 UTP cabling, kilometers over fiber, and more interestingly, over no wires at all.

Equally applicable to the high latency, restricted bandwidth and variable error rates of wireless media, ExtremeUSB manages the delay and latency inherent in wireless technology, enabling true cable replacement wireless USB 2.0 over any distance and any RF (radio) technology. This is Icron’s Cable Free USB.

WiRanger™ Powered by ExtremeUSB

Icron has combined ExtremeUSB technology with a commercially available 802.11g radio solution to develop the WiRanger, a four port Cable Free USB hub solution, featuring:

  • Full compatibility with USB 2.0 and 1.1
  • No software drivers – completely plug-and-play.
  • Support for all Operating systems (Windows 2000, XP, MAC OSX, Solaris, Unix Linux)
  • Support for all USB transfer types - Control, Bulk, Interrupt and Isochronous

Much discussion of wireless USB technology has centered around the Ultrawideband (UWB) radio technology, a radio solution that offers high data rates over short reach connections.  Icron’s ExtremeUSB for Wireless core can be applied to any radio platform, and is ideally suited to solutions over UWB, 802.11 or any proprietary radio. In selection of an 802.11 radio for the initial WiRanger solution, Icron saw significant advantages to supporting this radio platform.  Along with the features discussed previously, an 802.11 radio offers:

  • Quicker time to market using commercially available, reliable radio technology.
  • Increased reach over UWB radio phys.
  • Potential for compatibility and integration into existing, deployed WiFi networks.
  • Easy path to upgrade and improve performance and reach as 802.11n solutions become cost-effective.
